Our genealogical library is in need of more docents. This can be a fun volunteer job, as you get to interact with other researchers and help some beginners get off to a good start. It can also be time well spent since you can usually work on your own genealogical research while covering the desk. So, if you have some time and would like to help out, call Janet Franks at (949) 496-8428.

Our membership chairman, Iris Graham, has announced that dues are only $10 now for the rest of the year 2000. This would be a good time to encourage a friend to try out a membership.

The US Internet Genealogical Society (USIGS) has formed with the purpose of promoting free access to primary documents on the internet. The idea is that the more primary source documents that are made available to historians and researchers online, the easier it will be to check out the myriad of data that appears on the internet without the proof or documentation. For more info on the valuable resources offered by this organization, visit their website

A fellow researcher sent me the following I will pass on to the rest of you to check out and see what you think. It is GenBay, a genealogy search engine at

Member Shirley Fraser has informed us of a new subscriber-based website coming this fall, that will have digital images of the entire 1790-1920 U.S. Census Population Schedules. These are the same digital images that were just released on CDs by Heritage Quest. Information on prices for the CDs can be found at Thank you, Shirley.

As we promised in our last newsletter, we will list the collection of approximately 80 CDS that are now available at our library for your research use. Most are from Family Tree Maker and offer extensive databases for Marriage Records, Land Records, Military Records, Passenger/Immigration Lists, Vital Records and Family Histories. For your convenience, we are listing them by the CD Case number in which they are stored with the archive number in parentheses. Their titles are pretty self explanatory of their content. With our bookshelves filling up, these CDs offer us a tremendous amount of data to explore without taking up very much of our limited storage space.
